Local Attractions

The Cuchara Valley

Follow trails through tall evergreens and quaking aspens. Stand on rock outcroppings and survey the valleys and vistas as they tumble upon each other to the horizon. Sit under a tree and listen…to the songs of the birds, the wind, the trees…the song of the mountains. Relax you’re in the Cuchara Valley.

The Cuchara Valley has something for almost everyone. For history buffs, a visit to Francisco Fort Museum in La Veta is a must. La Veta is also home to several working artists, whose work can be seen at the Gallery in the La Veta Town Park, as well as several local businesses.

With San Isabel National Forest surrounding Cuchara, there are a lot of opportunities for camping, hiking, mountain biking, hunting, cross country skiing, fishing or just sitting under a tree. Public access for fishing can be found at Bear and Blue Lakes at the Cuchara Recreation Area south of La Veta, Trail information can be obtained from the San Isabel National Forests office in La Veta. Horseback riding, golf and other activities are available through private vendors.

The Valley is also home to a variety of wildlife. In addition to deer and elk, there are big horn sheep, black bear, mountain lion, fox, bobcat, coyote and beaver.

The nearby Spanish Peaks are a national landmark and named one of Colorado’s Seven Wonders by the Denver Post. The Highway of The Legends, connecting Walsenburg with La Veta, other historic mining towns, and Trinidad, is a National Scenic and Historic Byway,

The Walsenburg Golf Course is a 9-hole public golf course open for play year round. The City opened a two-million dollar water park, “Walsenburg Wild Waters” after efforts by former mayor Maurice Brau and the City Council, on May 27, 2007.

Lathrop State Park, located 2 miles (3.2 km) west of the city limits of Walsenburg, is the State of Colorado’s first State Park and is over 1,600 acres (6.5 km2) in size. Two lakes, Martin Lake and Horseshoe Lake offer fishing, stocked by the State of Colorado (Division of Wildlife of the Department of Natural Resources), water skiing, boating, jet skiing, hiking, camping and is the only State Park in Colorado with a golf course.
