County purchases Cuchara acreage for public park
“(Published: Feb. 2, 2017) The county closed on the purchase of 49 acres near the base of the former Cuchara Mountain Resort on Friday, January 27. County Commissioners say the land will be used as a public mountain park. Huerfano County purchased the land from QE Ventures, Inc. for $150,000 using funds to be donated by the Cuchara Foundation.
County Administrator John Galusha said signage is posted to direct the public to access the parcel near the base of the former ski area.
A Mountain Park Advisory Committee has been formed to draft rules and begin developing a master plan for the area.”
What this means is that the National Forest and amenities on the mountain will soon be accessible. It was previously privately owned and in tax delinquent status, thus chained off, preventing mountain access.

Sit under a tree and listen…to the songs of the birds, the wind, the trees…the song of the mountains. Relax you’re in the Cuchara Valley.

With San Isabel National Forest surrounding Cuchara, there are a lot of opportunities for camping, hiking, mountain biking, hunting, cross-country skiing, fishing or just sitting under a tree. Public access for fishing can be found at Bear and Blue Lakes at the Cuchara Recreation Area south of La Veta, Trail information can be obtained from the San Isabel National Forests office in La Veta. Horseback riding, golf, and other activities are available through private vendors.
The Valley is also home to a variety of wildlife. In addition to deer and elk, there are bighorn sheep, black bear, mountain lion, fox, bobcat, coyote, and beaver.
The nearby Spanish Peaks are a national landmark and named one of Colorado’s Seven Wonders by the Denver Post. The Highway of The Legends, connecting Walsenburg with La Veta, other historic mining towns, and Trinidad, is a National Scenic and Historic Byway,
The Walsenburg Golf Course is a 9-hole public golf course open for play year round. The City opened a two-million dollar water park, “Walsenburg Wild Waters” after efforts by former Mayor Maurice Brau and the City Council, on May 27, 2007.
Lathrop State Park, located 2 miles (3.2 km) west of the city limits of Walsenburg, is the State of Colorado’s first State Park and is over 1,600 acres (6.5 km2) in size.
